For as long as he can remember James Alley has been
creating art. He was primarily drawn to graffiti but has
appropriated what he has learned from the urban
landscape and developed a unique
contemporary style.
James has traveled throughout Europe, LA and New York
researching art and design and is a regular
attendee at international art and
design conferences.
James has studied design extensively and enjoys
the merging of disciplines technology has allowed.
He is passionate about his work and is as
proficient at creating imagery on the
computer as he is with a
pencil or brush.
Personally, inspiration to paint is spawned from people
and relationships. My current pieces are based on observations
of people from differing backgrounds. These paintings
are exaggerated records of detailed observations
or casual glimpses of ordinary people.
By singling out specific characters and isolating them,
I encourage viewers to imagine situations and
circumstances which surround people.
Socially we do this everyday. An outsiders
perception of our appearance effects our lives,
our jobs and our day to day lives. We are inextricably
swallowed up by the reaction of others to our appearance.
My work is original in style though influences can be
seen from the art, design, illustration and urban art
disciplines. The pieces would be as comfortable
in a children's book as they would in a
gallery or on the street.
Far from being simply a decorative piece on the wall,
my art attempts to convey extensive narrative,
infinitely open to interpretation. Whimsical, silly, sinister,
obscure, demented, funny are all adjectives which
somehow sit comfortably together in the description of the work.

James currently works full time in the design industry and
exhibits regularly, but is eager to pursue his passion for
painting on a full time basis.
His primary focus for 2006 will be drawing, traveling, entering
local competitions and refining his practice.
