"Darker Subtexts"

"The Villain"
(pastel 75 x 55cm)
JME works with traditional pastels and oils to create her twisted tales of seemingly normal little schoolgirls, their pets and dollies. Drawing from her own experiences growing up in an all girl’s school, JME’s darker subtext touches the viewer and compels them to feel empathy for her characters. "The Stojovic Sisters" (Oil on Canvas 30 x 40cm)
“In my art I explore the line between good and evil and the innate
nature of the child. In doing so, I juxtapose simple “cute”
imagery with a dark subtext. Additionally I attempt
to use subtle humour in my work
to soften the moral commentary
and develop recourse.”

Having been compared to artists such as Mark Ryden, Camilla Rose Garcia and Gris Grimly (Sally Brown, Rave Magazine); JME’s art work typifies the “spooky-cute” nature of these artists.

"Into the woods"
 (oil on canvas 20cm x 25cm)

JME’s talent for art was recognized in high school where she was
elected as Arts Committee Leader and was involved in the
coordination of the school Art Prize. During the final
year of school she also exhibited in the
Excellence in Youth art exhibition.

“That was really strange” she says “One day I got a letter
from the minister thanking me for my participation.
I didn’t even know that I had been entered!” On
completing secondary school JME studied
art at the Berkenboom Technical Institute
in Belgium where she completed her
specialization year in “Art and
Graphic Design”.

A large part of this course involved the use
of pastels, with which JME has been working ever since.

"There was a time"
(pastel 75x55cm)

Since returning to Australia JME has been working
on refining her technique. This has involved
long hours in self study of media and
technique and much trial and error.
Additionally, JME received a lot of support
and assistance by friend and mentor,
VR Morrison.

“V is such a good person and is so helpful and giving
and has really helped me a lot with my oils.”

"Psalm 23" (oil on canvas 30 x 40cm) In December of last year JME released a range of limited edition T-Shirts. These shirts are limited to 50 of each print and are currently available via her website www.dollydidit.com or through Gallery Six Nundah www.gallerysixnundah.com In releasing the shirts JME says she “wanted a way to make my artwork available to a younger audience without losing too much artistic integrity. For this reason I decided to limit the print run to only 50 of each design.” The use of a special printing process and hand stitching makes these shirts truly collectable in their own right. dolly did it shirt featuring “lollypop” “2005 was a busy year for me; having been involved in two successful exhibitions ( “Issues” at Gallery Six Nundah and “Loading Zone” at Art Stockroom www.artstockroom.com ) and selected as “Feature Artist” at the Nundah Art Prize as well as finally releasing my shirts.”
“I am looking forward to new and exciting challenges in 2006”
