I love the unique vivid colours of the Australian landscape; the strong earthy smells after
a tropical rain downpour; the constant cacophony of bird and bush and ocean sounds;
and the assaulting, almost-blinding light. To try and capture this Australian rawness
and brilliance that I am so captivated by, I like to use strong brush strokes
and bright primary colours (usually acrylics and mixed media), particularly
oranges and blues, on my canvases.

I’m a self-taught artist and children’s book illustrator. I’ve illustrated and drawn one
thing or another for most of my life, following in a long line of several generations
of published figurative artists in my family. Oils, watercolours, detailed pencil
drawings, lithographs and detailed life drawings, feature in my early works.
My new direction however is abstract expressionism and I enjoy
passionately experimenting with new painterly techniques that
create textures and layers. A carpenter in a former life, I also
love construction art and creating site-specific works for unique
Corporate environments

I was an artist-in-residence at The Quarry in Whangarei, New Zealand before coming to
live in Australia, where I organised and ran art courses, life drawing groups and drawing
courses for special-needs students. I knew I would always return to live here after
climbing the magical Uluru some twenty years ago when I was an exchange
student (from boarding school in Scotland). I originally grew up in Sri Lanka
and find travelling creatively and artistically inspiring for my artwork. Last
year I spent two months in France, following one of my Life’s dreams
to see the Mona Lisa; along with art galleries exhibiting works by
Picasso in the small southern town of Ceret, and also
Van Gogh’s Auvers-sur-Oise.

‘I am very much influenced by Australia’s contemporary art master, Brett Whitely,
whose passion in paint continues to inspire me long after his death. Overseas
influences include Jackson Pollock; and Van Gogh for their passion to try
something new and controversial in their time’.

Many of my works centre around the chance, serendipitous connections we make
in life and with each other, and how the smallest movement can affect the
journey of something or someone else, often intensely, in the Universe.

Works such as: ‘Alchemy’; ‘Chaos Theory’; and ‘Butterfly Effect’ explore these notions
with few artistic constraints. When Life is left to chance, the spirit is truly liberated.
Where does the last dribble of paint dribble to? What journey does a painting
taken from tin to canvas on to someone’s wall?…and what happens to it
next?The journey of a work continues…affecting someone else’s life.
I strongly believe everything in Life has its own journey, even
supposedly inanimate objects that have had a life-force
painted into them at a moment in time.

I recently participated in a group exhibition ‘Emerge’, at Central Plaza One, and my
next exhibitions include the Ascot Art Gallery in August/September and also
Neo Gallery in December. The most fun I ever had doing art though
were the traffic signal boxes in Brisbane!

My artistic journey continues…with a Life force all its own!
